The Neighborhood Music School's original recital hall, built in 1968, had become inadequate for the growing school's needs for recitals and other events. The planned 50% expansion in area provided an opportunity to make other needed improvements including acoustics, flexibility, and appearance. The new space has a flexible "black box" type ceiling grid with theatrical style track lighting. A focus of the room is a 24 foot long operable glass wall which provides a natural backdrop to the performers and, in good weather, folds open to create a proscenium stage for outdoor concerts in the park behind the school.
