| In this project, an industrial area adjacent to a residential zone was redeveloped into affordable housing units. The site was designed to recreate and reinforce the historic residential character of the area and to promote a sense of community. The buildings are divided into three-story rental housing and two- story home ownership townhouses. A large common area behind the rental apartments contains a small community building, an adjacent terrace for outdoor gatherings, and a common play area in view of many of the residential units. The aesthetic of the new structures draws from the character of the existing homes – seaside style houses with sloped roofs, large gable forms, clapboard siding, traditional detailing and extensive front porches, thereby reincorporating the site into the surrounding neighborhood. | |||||||
